Pellew is the 9th and largest Pilot Cutter buily by Luke Powell in Truro, Cornwall in 2020. She is 68ft on deck, 74 tons and is based on a traditional pilot cutter No.8 St Vincent of St Mawes. These pilot cutters of old, predominantly 19th Century, were built to be extremely strong, fast, powerful and sea worthy in order to be able to sail out in all conditions to big ships approaching land off the Isles of Scilly or Lands End in need of a pilot with local knowledge to guide them safely into port.

Inspired by the working boats built by Luke Powell of Working Sail this painting is based on a photo by Christian Topf by from the first Pilot Cutter Review in 2006 and my memory. I was sailing pregnant with my first baby. It is a eulogy to boatbuilders and sailors of the past and last 20 years gone by capturing the golden hour.

This is from a photo I took in 2014 at The Douarnenez Festival. These are 2 awesome French fishing boats, Biche, built 1934 nearly 70ft long, 75 tonnes built to haul tuna, a Dundee Tunnyboat. At the time skippered unusually by a woman which was so inspiring. The Cancalaise is a replica of a bisquine oyster drag ship, she is an incredible sight on the water,

Guide Me is the 1911 40 ft Looe Lugger. She is an icon on the seas of Cornwall and far and wide having sailed engineless to South Africa and back. Owned by Judy and Jono Brickall sinsce 1977, she has a turn of speed and magic that is so powerful and felt by all who love traditional wooden boats. I first came across her in 1992 in France sailing with my grandparents and then she reappeared to me when I sailed up to Gweek with my own family in 2012.

Gleaner is the restored 70ft drifter, built in Porthleven in 1878. Recovered from Germany she was brought back to Penryn in Cornwall in parts and restored. She sailed again 40 years after she was abandoned.

Baranabus is a traditional Cornish dipping lugger and the only one of her kind to survive from a huge fleet of mackrel and pilchard fishing boat drivers that operated out of St Ives in the 19th Century. Built in 1881 she is 143 years old, full of character and loved by many. As part of the Cornish Maritime Trust, she received the honour of the Centenarian Award in 2026 recognising her status and importance in maritime history. In 2024 she sailed 1400 miles around the Uk.

This is from a photo of mine as Provident over took us on the parade of sail through the Pic de Pois. These work horses of the sea are enchanting. I first saw one, Leader in Dover Harbour in the mist in 2004. The we restored Pilgrim, it was facinating to see such huge timbers. The weight of the construction! Despite being from Devon Provident spent many years of her life in Helford, Cornwall.

The Farewell, Keewaydin 2026

I felt compelled to paint this to commemorate the very sad loss of Keewaydin to a fire in March 2026. She was built in 1913 on the East Coast of Britain as a fishing boat, a smack to fish in the North Sea.. 70ft overall and 65 tons she was a big and somewhat tragic character for many years on Cornish waters. She burnt to the ground just weeks before her launch following a restoration in Penryn

Irene is the last of the awesome West Country trading ketches. She was built in 1907 and is 100ft in length. In 2003 she burnt to the waterline and sank in the Carrebean, only to be raised and restored back to her former glory in Cornwall and sailing again in 2009. In 2004 I became aquainnted with her owners and her story enchanted me. When I heard she was up on the slip in Newlyn I just had to rush down there and paint her.
